Collaboration Leads to Revised ADA Bill

he proposed law will expand narrow court interpretations that have restricted ADA coverage in the workplace for people with disabilities. It is expected to increase the overall number of disabled people able to request reasonable accommodations, but should not have a significant impact on ADA employment policies already in place.

Attention Deficits That May Linger Well Past Childhood

A November 2007 M.R.I. brain-imaging study showed an average three-year lag in a brain maturation process in children with A.D.H.D.

Affected areas of the brain are involved in executive functions like focus, attention, working memory and control of movement.

Weighing Nondrug Options for A.D.H.D.

About 2.5 million children in the United States take stimulant drugs for attention and hyperactivity problems. But concerns about side effects have prompted many parents to look elsewhere: as many as two-thirds of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or A.D.H.D., have used some form of alternative treatment.

Despite improvement, America still discriminates

James Gears is a rehabilitation services and Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator with the state of Ohio’s Rehabilitation Services Commission. As such, he writes in the March/April 2008 issue of “News Net,” Ohio’s disability services magazine, about recently released statistics from the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. The report details statistics covering the federal fiscal year 2007. Gears summarize those statistics in a number of speeches delivered each year to various business state organizations.

Why Youngsters With Autistic Spectrum Disorders Remain Underrepresented in Special Education

Although numerous investigations have examined the prevalence of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) in the general population, have special education identification rates of autism kept pace? From the 1992-1993 to 2001-2002 school years, U.S. Department of Education data indicate an increase from 15,580 to 97,904 students with autism, an expansion of 528% and an annual average growth of 22.69%. Gaithersburg School Tailors Teaching To Help Students Cope With Disorder

The first day of kindergarten found Alex Barth in the principal’s office. The teacher had asked students to draw self-portraits. Alex had wanted to draw his in red crayon. There was no red crayon. Alex had melted down.

Plan Seeks More Access for Disabled
