Boston scientists find autism genes linked to learning

Researchers from Boston have discovered six new genes implicated in autism. The genes normally make new brain connections needed for learning, but their absence or silence apparently places them among many mutations that lead to the devastating disorder, which is marked by trouble with communication and social interaction.

Gene sweep yields half a dozen autism culprits

WASHINGTON – Harvard researchers have discovered half a dozen new genes involved in autism that suggest the disorder strikes in a brain that can’t properly form new connections.

The findings also may help explain why intense education programs do help some autistic children — because certain genes that respond to experience weren’t missing, they were just stuck in the “off” position.

Fringe Autism Treatment Could Get Federal Study

CHICAGO (AP) — Pressured by desperate parents, government researchers are pushing to test an unproven treatment on autistic children, a move some scientists see as an unethical experiment in voodoo medicine.

The treatment removes heavy metals from the body and is based on the fringe theory that mercury in vaccines triggers autism — a theory never proved and rejected by mainstream science. Mercury hasn’t been in childhood vaccines since 2001, except for certain flu shots.

Harkin sees ADA erode

The Americans with Disabilities Act is Sen. Tom Harkin’s baby, and he’s not happy that it has been undermined by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Iowa Democrat, who is credited with shepherding the process that led to the signing of the ADA in 1990, is preparing to lead another charge, this time to restore what he said was Congress’ original intent — protecting individuals with disabilities from discrimination.

The Vermont Center for Independent Living is proud to host the 3rd Annual Celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA turns 18 this year with a gathering on the Vermont State House lawn in Montpelier. Event hours are from 11AM to 2PM. This event is free and open to the public.
