State to survey disabled and related employment issues

Starting Tuesday, the state is launching a survey to learn more about employment issues for the disabled in New Mexico.

The New Mexico Human Services Department’s Medical Assistance Division and the state’s Focusing on Abilities partners (15 agencies) are joining forces to conduct the statewide research.

“This survey will help us determine what obstacles people with disabiilities currently have in obtaining work in New Mexico,” said Carolyn Ingram, director of the Medical Assistance division. “[It] will also provide some data on how effective our current programs are … and how improvements can be made.”

War Veterans’ Concussions Are Often Overlooked

Mendon Mountain Orchard

Back in the 1920′s when Dr. Thomas owned the orchard, he had two old houses put together to make one big orchard house.
Today, half the house serves as our bakery, motel office, and Millie’s house. The rest of the house, complete with a full bath, kitchen, private entry and lots of mouth watering bakery aromas, serves as a guest house.

CANTON – Just 29 years old, Kaya Alexander lives in a nursing home. She had no other options after a 2006 car accident broke her neck, damaged her brain, and sheared off three fingers of her left hand, the only hand she can move.

Protesters decry “Tropic Thunder” in Vermont

MONTPELIER — Protesters who picketed a Montpelier movie theater showing the new movie “Tropic Thunder” say the blockbuster comedy is mean-spirited in the way it portrays a character with cognitive disabilities.

What ‘Tropic Thunder’ Thinks Is Funny

I’ve been told to keep my sense of humor about the film “Tropic Thunder,” which opens this week. Despite my requests, I have not been given the chance to see the movie. But I’ve seen previews, read about it and read excerpts of the script. By all accounts, it is an unchecked assault on the humanity of people with intellectual disabilities — an affront to dignity, hope and respect.
