Workers comp claims are on the decline

Safer workplaces, return to jobs cited

Most workers compensation cases in Michigan are settled without litigation; employees recover from injuries and return to work.  In 2007, there were 27,613 reports of injuries in which employees missed work for at least a week.

Policies and programs that have been built over the last two decades and that make health and independence possible for otherwise vulnerable groups of Vermonters must be preserved.

New book offers cure for symptoms of autism, ADHD

It sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. A Long Island doctor has developed a non-drug, non-medical therapy that can reverse the behavior and academic problems associated with autism and ADHD.

The groundbreaking therapy is called Brain Balance and is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Melillo, who has used it successfully to date on more than 1,000 children. The program and how it works is detailed in the new book, Disconnected Kids: The Groundbreaking Brain Balance Program for Children with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Neurological Disorders, that hit bookstores Jan 6. The book is a self-help program designed so parents can achieve similar results at home.

Employment Gap Widens for Disabled

Between 2003 and 2004 the employment gap widened between the number of working-age Americans with disabilities who are employed and those workers without disabilities, a new report released this month on Capitol Hill shows.

New Guidelines for Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome

People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — an estimated 7 percent to 10 percent of the world’s population — have a lot to contend with. The miserable task of managing unpredictable, uncomfortable and embarrassing lower-bowel activities, from diarrhea and cramps to constipation and excess gas, is bad enough.

Articles in this series are exploring medical treatments used despite scant proof that they work and are examining steps toward medicine based on evidence.

But it hardly matters. Here as elsewhere in the country, some users start early, fall fast and in their reckless prime can swallow, snort, inject or smoke anything available, from crystal meth to prescription pills to heroin and ecstasy. And treatment, if they get it at all, can seem like a joke.

Justices’ Ruling in Discrimination Case May Draw Quick Action by Obama

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress are planning swift action to overturn a Supreme Court decision that made it much harder for people to challenge discrimination in employment, education, housing and other fields.
