Campaign for Disability Employment Announces Online Video Contest

WASHINGTON, Today, the Campaign for Disability Employment, a newly-formed collaborative of leading disability organizations, announced that it is launching an online video contest to promote the talent and skills that people with disabilities bring to America’s workforce and economy. The top videos will play a key role in the campaign’s late summer launch and will be featured on its Web site. The overall contest winner will receive a prize worth $1,500.

May 2009 Disability Employment Statistics Released

In May 2009, the percent of people with disabilities in the labor force was 22.9 compared with 71.1 for persons with no disability. The unemployment rate for those with disabilities was 13.7 percent, compared with 8.9 percent for persons with no disability, not seasonally adjusted.

Judge denies union’s effort to block layoffs

UPDATED: 12:45 P.M.A Superior Court judge has denied a request by the state employees union for a restraining order to block the layoff of 120 state workers.

Judge Dennis Pearson dismissed the Vermont State Employees Association lawsuit against the administration of Gov. Jim Douglas after a two-hour hearing in Chittenden Superior Court in Burlington.

Extreme Child-Care Maneuvers

It was a hand-off reminiscent of a spy movie.
Rushing from a client meeting earlier this month, advertising consultant Ted Villa wheeled his Jetta into an office-building parking lot, whipped out his cellphone and reported his location to his business partner and wife, Nancy Snow Villa. Moments later, Ms. Villa piloted their SUV into a nearby spot, their three small children riding in back. (more…)

Panel Concerned About Abuse of Disabled Students

New rules are needed to curb “widespread” abuse of the disabled in American schools, said Representative George Miller, Democrat of California, who heads the House Education and Labor Committee, after a Congressional study found hundreds of cases since 1990 in which students were said to have been improperly restrained or confined.

The Disability Mess

07disability480-copyThe 2010 budget unveiled on Thursday by the Obama administration estimates that the government can generate huge savings if it devotes more resources to eliminating fraud, abuse and waste in Medicare, Medicaid and the Social Security disability insurance program.

In the Social Security program alone, the White House proposes to spend $4.3 billion over five years to fight fraud associated with disability claims — a problem, officials say, that stems from lack of oversight. (more…)
