Walmart Foundation grants $3 million to fund transition project for disabled youth

clip_image001Retail giant Walmart has teamed up with The Arc of the United States – the world’s largest community-based organization of and for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities – to establish the Walmart Foundation School-to-Community Transition Project.

The Walmart Foundation awarded The Arc a $3 million to start the project, which will be dedicated to improving outcomes for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially during the transition from school to adult life.

TV Journalist Wounded in Iraq Returns to the War

wood-2-190For the first time since he was seriously injured in Iraq in 2006, the ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff returned to the war zone on Monday.

Mr. Woodruff, 47, who is perhaps the highest-profile member of the news media to be wounded in the six-year-long war, has sought to keep a spotlight on Iraq, and especially on the soldiers who experience traumatic brain injury and combat stress while on duty there. Mr. Woodruff said in an ABCNews.com blog post that he would be interviewing front-line doctors and nurses and viewing new equipment that is said to reduce injuries among the military forces in that country.

A case for home-based employment and telecommuting

Organizational cost savings and effectiveness. People with disabilities. The environment. Individual health and family well being.

You may wonder what these disparate issues have in common. The answer is that each would be significantly enhanced by the widespread adoption by both private and public employers of home-based employment practices such as telecommuting.

‘Sit! Stay! Snuggle!’: An Iraq Vet Finds His Dog Tuesday

hc-gn913_dog_bv_20090710204855NEW YORK — Like any other golden retriever seeking a treat, Tuesday nudged his owner’s hand with his snout one recent morning and waited expectantly.

Luis Carlos Montalvan got up from a chair in his small Brooklyn apartment and walked to the kitchen. Tuesday followed close behind, eyes fixed on a white cabinet. The retriever sat alertly as Mr. Montalvan, an Iraq war veteran with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, reached for a vial of pills, lined a half-dozen on the table and took them one by one.

Disabilities law nears age 19, with the vigor of a 70-year-old

With celebrations of sorts expected this summer to herald the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act 19 years ago, there are those who think the purchase of a birthday or anniversary card is in order. I, regrettably, submit that a “get well” card would be more appropriate.

In an interview on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, the wellness guru Dr. Deepak Chopra, a longtime friend of Michael Jackson, disclosed that the singer suffered from lupus. (more…)
