30 Workshops  -  Music   -   Art   -   Resources   –   Bookseller

Our theme is CollaboraFantasy – turning dreams into reality and embracing the collaborative spirit during challenging times.

During our opening session, we’ll hear from Agency of Human Services Secretary Rob Hofmann, and Anthony Quintiliani, a past presenter and a first time keynoter at our conference. Anthony’s workshops have been amongst the most popular over the past 6 years.

We have 30 workshops on important and interesting topics such as housing, transition youth, art and human services, Circles of Support and Neighborkeepers, leading during challenging times, improving educational outcomes for children and youth in foster care, parent involvement, promising trends in child welfare, refugee communities, supporting our military families, and many others.

The Arts Bus will be on-site (check out A10 in the brochure) as will participant favorites from last year, Ikkuma and Sura, therapy dogs (C10). In B1, you’ll have an opportunity to be trained to use a “low ropes” course so dress casually.

Our conference bookseller, Everyone’s Books from Brattleboro, will be with us again. We’ll present this year’s winner of the John Burchard “Spirit of Collaboration” award (nomination inside the conference brochure).

This will likely be the last year of this unique and special event, so don’t miss out!!

See you in Killington on October 16th.

Billions of special education federal funds historically go unspent

The single most common school district excuse for not giving special education students a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) is that “they don’t have the funds.”   This excuse gives districts a golden ticket to tossing special education students out in the world without the skills for financial self-sufficiency. Many vulnerable parents believe this and blindly trust public schools no matter what, thus making it easy to cheat children out of a minimum standard of education.

Fair play on special education

THE U.S. Supreme Court corrects an imbalance in power by ruling that public school districts must pay for special-ed students’ private schooling if districts cannot provide an adequate alternative.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), parents have been entitled to recoup the costs of private-school tuition but only if the child attended a district’s school and services were proven inadequate.

CDC: 20% in U.S. have some disability

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five Americans has a disability.

The agency said it expects that number to grow as the U.S. population’s average age rises. According to the CDC, 85 million Americans are disabled. The leading disability is arthritis, followed by back problems and heart conditions.

Final note: Employers should expect more accommodation requests as aging employees stay in the workforce during this economic downturn.
