Monkton man named acting Education Commissioner

MONTPELIER – Bill Talbott has been named acting commissioner of education, the Vermont State Board of Education announced today.

Talbott, a resident of Monkton, currently serves as chief financial officer and deputy commissioner for the department, a position he has held for over 10 years and will continue to serve in concurrently with his acting commissioner responsibilities.

Prior to joining the department, he served in the Vermont Legislature from 1987 through 1996, holding positions on the House Education, Ways and Means, and Appropriations committees, and serving as chair on the Health and Welfare Committee. He was then the President of the Association of Vermont Independent Colleges. He also taught industrial arts and ran an alternative education program in the Hinesburg school district in the mid-seventies and early-eighties.

Talbott holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from the University of Florida, and a Master’s of Science in Administration from St. Michael’s College.

Talbott will begin serving as acting commissioner June 23, the day outgoing Commissioner Richard Cate steps down from the post to begin serving as the Interim Vice President of Finance and Operations at the University of Vermont.

The Board will initiate a national search for a permanent commissioner.
