Violence Prevention Educator To Speak In Burlington, St. Johnsbury
Paul Kivel, a social justice activist and violence prevention educator, will be in Vermont for public speaking events and private workshop presentations on April 7 and April 8 in St. Johnsbury and Burlington.
Here are the scheduled public events:
April 7, Lyndon State College, Rita Bole Meeting Room
9 a.m. – noon — Kivel will address “Wealth, Power, and Class: Who Benefits, Who Pays, and Who Really Decides”
1:00PM – 4:00PM — Paul Kivel will address “Becoming Allies for Social Justice” co-sponsored by Umbrella, St. Johnsbury Community Justice Center, and Lyndon State College.
April 8
Noon to 1:30 p.m. — Kivel will address “Men’s Work: Stopping Violence, Building Community” at Contois Auditorium, 149 Church Street, Burlington, Vermont — co-sponsored by the Women’s Rape Crisis Center
7 pm. to 8:30 p.m. — Kivel will address “Diversity: Becoming Allies for Social Justice” at University of Vermont, Billings Lecture Hall (BLH-100), formerly known as “CC Theater” — Co-sponsored by The Anti-Violence Partnership at UVM and the Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Counseling Center.
Kivel has been a leader in violence prevention for more than 27 years. He is a trainer and speaker on men’s issues, racism and diversity, challenges of youth, teen dating and family violence, raising boys to manhood, and the impact of class and power on daily life. Kivel is the author of numerous books and curricula, including Uprooting Racism: How White People Can Work for Racial Justice, which won the 1996 Gustavus Myers Award for best book on human rights.
